Biggles Holiday Airdrop

Authors are revealed, and here's what I wrote!

An Appointment to Keep (1400 wds, Biggles + Erich + An OC [Original Cat])
My recipient liked fluff and animals, so that is exactly what's in this! Set late in canon.

Draped in Glory (1300 wds, Algy/Ginger)
And this was a treat for pinch hitter [personal profile] black_bentley, who it seemed only fair should have a gift too! This is basically an Algy/Ginger take on the Biggles/EvS "putting on jewelry" fic I wrote a couple of years ago; it always seemed to me that it should work for them equally well.

Under Glass (1900 wds, Biggles/EvS)
Not exactly a Sleeping Beauty AU ... but also kind of a Sleeping Beauty AU! Set in canon, but Biggles is under a curse; only true love's kiss can wake him. This was a last-minute treat when the idea hit me out of the blue.

Please Note: Because we only have 3 entries this week, there is only a First Place and Runner Up to vote for!

In order to vote, please reply to this post using the form provided. All comments are screened, and entries are listed in the order they were submitted. Meeting the bonus goal on an entry gets an extra point for that submission.

When voting, please copy/paste the ENTRY NUMBER and the FIC TITLE from the list above into the spot you're voting for (this prevents accidentally mis-numbering a vote and casting it for the wrong entry). It should look like this:

First Place: 61. Fic Title Here
Runner Up: 88. Another Fic Title

Please note that you cannot vote for your own entry, and that votes cannot be made anonymously. You do not have to be a member of the community in order to vote, nor have submitted an entry for this week; everyone is welcome to participate in the voting. that's it, 843 days later.

For the first time since - I want to say October 7th 2023, though technically it's 2014 - but 843 days after, as of today, there are finally no more hostages in Gaza, living or dead.

I legit didn't think we'd get here. I hoped, but realistically, I was sure some would still be missing forever, lost to the fog of war and time. The big weight off was in October this year, when the last living 20 came back, but now, today, the final marker, and something families - and hopefully, maybe, this country - can begin to try to recover and move on, for real.

(Recovery also means getting rid of current leadership amen, which, easier hoped for than done. But I hope.)

Time to start collecting - packing away - tossing out - all of my yellow ribbons and flags, from my car, from my porch, from my bag. It's about time.

Fic wants 2026

So every so often I do one of these posts and the last one was August 2024 which is awhile ago. I had thought about updating the last one a few months back but decided there were too many updates for that. (And then stuff got in the way)

So here’s the new one finally being done, partly cause of snowflake having a wishlist post, but also partly to distract my brain. (But also damn I intended to post this last week and it’s took me this long)

In large part the ones from the last post still apply even if they’re not posted again. (And from others too)

Abolish ICE

So yeah, kind of hard to concentrate on work while being consumed by rage. I've been to conventions in the Minneapolis area and I have a lot of friends up there, and one of my goddaughters and her husband live there.

For instance, this is Greg Ketter, from DreamHaven Books, where I've done signings, at the protest and running into tear gas:

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/XHDR1PnqPeg

I've been doing mutual aid and sending donations where I can (https://www.standwithminnesota.com/) which is helping my sanity somewhat.

Other stuff I should link to:

Interview with me on Space.com https://www.space.com/entertainment/space-books/martha-wells-next-murderbot-diaries-book-is-the-family-roadtrip-from-hell-on-ringworld-interview

Weather permitting, I'll be guest of honor this coming weekend at AggieCon in College Station: https://www.aggiecon.net/

That's all I've got right now. Abolish ICE.

Snowflake 2026 - Challenge #13

two log cabins with snow on the roofs in a wintery forest the text snowflake challenge january 1 - 31 in white cursive text

TALK ABOUT A COMMUNITY SPACE YOU LIKE. It doesn’t need to be your favourite, or the one where you spend the most time (although it certainly can be). Maybe it’s even one that you’ve barely visited. But talk about that space and how it helps support fannish community.

These are the communities I regularly participate in and completely enjoy:

[community profile] fan_flashworks which provides a new challenge prompt three times a month, multi-fandom and multimedia.  I've taken part for the last 11.5 years - some prompts really are a challenge, but great for being creative outside the standard boxes.

[community profile] ushobwri is a great community, encouraging the reluctant writer and cheering the productive one.  Run by [personal profile] brumeier I would recommend checking over on their response for further details.

[community profile] allbingo is a monthly bingo community, but very easy going and so ideal for me, as I generally go with a 2x2 card and write a chaptered fic.  [personal profile] ysabetwordsmith has written about it in their response

My other major enjoyment (I also take part in various drabble communities) is [community profile] no_true_pair which runs twice a year, once in March when there are 4 characters and once in September with 8 characters.  To take part, you sign up with either 4 or 8 numbered characters, can be from the same fandom or different ones, and it includes original characters, and then prompts are issued for each date, so that every character meets every other one.

FIC: Engineers' Rooms and Engineering Academy (Tempestuous Tours)

If you want to thank someone in Emor for your inn's lavatory, this is the place to do so. Emor's engineers are the best in the world and are admirably eager to spread their wonderful inventions outside of Emor. If you wish, you may make arrangements here to have your own tribe's housing improved; some engineers are willing to travel as far as the mainland, if the job is interesting enough.

As you may have guessed by now, "Engineering Academy" means that engineering students are trained here. While the Law Academy and Medical Academy train only peninsulareans, the Engineering Academy opens its doors to mainlanders as well. You may apply for entrance into the Academy while you are here.

[Translator's note: The Emorian engineers are so discreet in their work that they aren't often seen. However, their Marcadian colleagues are the ones to blame for the terrifying catapult used in Empty Dagger Hand.]

The Day in Spikedluv (Sunday, Jan 25)

I slept in again until 7:30am! Though it wasn’t a nice constant sleep because Pip got up due to coughing and he is not quiet when he is up and about. (I, otoh, am very quiet because I want him to stay in bed a while so I have some peace and quiet for myself. o_O) I did eventually fall back to sleep, which is when I had a strange dream in which I could understand Midnight. In the dream I was like, hmm, I guess being possessed by a cat that one time means I can now understand cats! When I woke up I was like, when was I possessed by a cat?!!!

I forgot to keep you all updated on the 'cat door' situation. When Pip told L (Ian's dad) what he planned to do, L said, why don't you just cut a hole in the wall? o_O So Pip took a chainsaw and cut a hole in the wall. I feel like I'm living in a real life episode of 'You might be a redneck if . . .' At least it worked! Pip's sister saw (on the cameras they installed) that a black and white cat had entered the garage! So she took up kitty litter and cat food for it this morning before the storm got too bad. I will keep you updated as more animals make the garage their home or the cat meets the dogs. o_O

I did two loads of laundry, hand-washed dishes, emptied the dishwasher, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, baked chicken for the dogs’ meals, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and changed kitty litter (it’s Sunday!). It was another no-cooking day because of all the leftovers; today it was leftover meatloaf.

What’s a girl to do on a snowy day but rewatch the first ep of Heated Rivalry?!! I also watched some House Hunters International and took a brief nap.

Temps started out at 3(F) (according to Pip; I didn’t see it because of sleeping in) and reached 5.2. The snow started nice and light about 8am. Pip was like, I hope it stays this light, but we didn’t think that would happen as the snow was supposed to start coming in heavier around 2pm. It didn’t seem to get any heavier, and yet, it still built up like crazy.

I didn’t have to do any shoveling (Pip said he’d do the sidewalk with the blower), but he was out there twice, shoveling the deck, then plowing (he brought the plow truck home, so used that instead of the blower because it is warmer inside the truck than outside on the tractor getting snow blown on you), plus he went up to the garage to clean that out so there wasn’t as much for tomorrow.

Mom Update:

Mom didn’t sound great when I talked to her. Sister A visited her early in the morning because she had to take Ireland to her BF’s house, then pick her up again, but mom was feeling very blue. She hates this kind of weather, even though she couldn’t go anywhere anyway, it make her feel more isolated. My brother also called her, and she thanked me for calling her. I was almost afraid she was going to start crying. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

I Don't Want Monday

It's Monday again. It's currently 10°, but it's not supposed to get much warmer. 16°, maybe? The forecast is calling only for flurries today, rather than yesterday's steady snow. We got at least a foot of snow yesterday. I didn't expect to see the snow guy, but he showed up around 5:00 p.m. I think I'm going to pay him half again what I normally pay him. That was a lot of snow. Looks like he was using a larger snowblower than usual, too. In any case, after he was gone, I had to put on my coat and boots and hat and two pairs of gloves and go outside to clean off the van and then shovel the resulting mess. Sometime between the time Snow Guy left and I got outside (twenty minutes or so later), the plow went through and left a sizeable ridge along the end of the driveway, so I'm going to have to shovel that this morning -- though I'm waiting until the plow goes by to get dressed to go out there.

I was really kind of counting on not being able to get out so that I wouldn't have to go to work today. All of the schools in this entire end of the state are closed, but of course my office isn't. Le sigh.

Yesterday was actually something of a productive day. I scrubbed the kitty fountain in the kitchen, and had such a hard time getting it apart that I think I'm going to have to scrub it weekly instead of biweekly; I think the condensate (precipitate?) from the hard water here was kind of glueing it together. I scrubbed and refilled one of the basement bubblers. (The other was still half full.) I brought three containers of kitty litter (two bags of clay and a jug of clumpable) in from the breezeway and took them down to the basement.

I also did a bunch of stuff at my desk. I had a bill that came after my last bill paying day, but was due before my next paycheck, so I paid that. My bank statement was sitting on my desk, so I balanced my checkbook, and it was the usual pain in the butt because of my abysmal math. There's a reason I keep the balances in pencil. I downloaded the new version of the software that I use for my taxes and installed it, then did my taxes, so that's done.

By that time, it was well after 1:00, and I was sleepy, so I decided to skip lunch and take a nap, which didn't, somehow, happen for another hour after that. Chasing noises, maybe, because there was a lot of animal noise yesterday. A lot of skittering and then a chirruping sort of noise from over the ceiling in the library, so I definitely need to call the removal specialist guy this week, even though it's the worst possible week for it: freezing cold and so much snow on the ground. I only heard the chirrupy noise twice. The second time I tried to record it, but it stopped before I got my phone unlocked.

I did eventually get my nap with cats.

And because of going out to clean off the van, I didn't get supper until late, meaning it was even later by the time I got the kitchen cleaned up, so no movies for me last night.

I am a bit concerned about Tegan. I'm not sure she has been eating. I don't know whether Parker has turned into a bully about the food or whether she has decided she doesn't like the bowls or whether she doesn't want to eat where there have possibly been rodents (remember the spilled kibble that disappeared?), but she kept pussing my legs while I was washing dishes last night like she wanted to be fed, but both bowls were full. So I pulled a spare bowl out of the cupboard, put some kibble into it, set it down next to my feet, and she went for it immediately. So I guess I'm somehow going to have to feed her separately from Parker. And I did have to nudge him out of it, of course, and she was very shy about coming to it after I had to nudge him out of it, so I'm inclined to think he's being a bully about it -- which he never was before, so I dunno what's going on there. I'm thinking of getting a camera (trail cam or nanny cam) to train on the food bowls to see what's going on there. I don't even know where I'd feed Tegan that's separate. Upstairs bathroom, maybe, but I don't really want to get into having food up there. Though with Kethri, I did eventually have to have a litter box up there, so....

Anyway. If I'm going to shovel the end-of-driveway ridge and still get to work in an hour and a half, I need to move my butt. Le sigh.
