Fly Boys and Pretty Birds

"So, do your own ears ring when you cut loose with that Cry of yours?" Hal asked with a rakish grin over the shared milkshake. He knew good and well that, despite her attempt to show off a maturity, she was all but jailbait for him.

He couldn't help himself, watching the way Dinah's lips wrapped around the straw, her eyes on him the whole while.

"Not unless it's amplified and directed back at me; found that out the hard way," she admitted. "I get white-noise effect, protecting me from it."

"Probably for the best; it's damned effective. The way you pushed Grundy — whoa, hey, what is it?"

"Reminded me too much of how I don't know the limits," she admitted, having lost her playful gamine look at the reminder. "It's not like I've had the ability to truly test it all that much in a controlled environment."

"How's a flight test range sound for setting that up?" Hal challenged. "We've got plenty of junk that you can demolish, I can get that kid Kord to come monitor with his doodads and spectra-whatevers?"

She lit back up, before giving him the most suspicious look he'd seen on her yet. "Hal, are you doing this to get something, or…"

"Scout's honor — yes I was one — that I want my teammate comfortable with her power." He then laughed a little. "The dates are completely separate from that. I like to earn a lady's graces the old-fashioned way."

She smiled at him. "Well, I do like the jacket, and you are rather handsome," she teased him. "Maybe my graces, as you put it, are within reach."

Hal smiled. "We'll just see how you feel after the movie." He had the feeling this friendship was going to last, even if that's all it was.

While trapped in a different universe, Dinah falls for another older man

Shelter in Danger

When Dinah Lance found herself catapulted into another dimension, it wasn't all that shocking. She's been tossed through time, sent to other worlds, and even touched alternate versions of her own world. To wake up in a world that was completely unlike her own as far as people and problems went, but still an Earth wasn't that hard to come to terms with.

No, the thing that shocked her was finding an older white-haired man with a harder sense of justice than she usually took for herself that stirred her emotions so strongly. Similarities to another man of her own world may have set the stage for growing closer, but it was Erik's ability to debate with her, to see her as a capable fighter in her own right, and his old-fashioned manners that sealed her doom.

There was just something irresistible in a man that opened doors for her but didn't think she needed to be in the kitchen for Dinah Lance.

She'd given her word that she would help defend this small island refuge. She wanted no part of his retaliatory strikes, but the people who were just trying to live their lives were under her protection. As Erik — Magneto currently — was deflecting the heavy artillery back into the attackers, Black Canary was ably working defense against the ground assault with his other combatants.

She had no idea how many amphibious vehicles she grounded permanently, how many people in deep-water gear were shoved back off the beach, but eventually Magneto gathered up all of the remaining debris from the assault and threw it out to join the artificial reef off his coastline. While he did that, she acquired one of her protein-gels, slaking a need for energy and liquid at once before seeing if she needed to help with injured.

Magneto landed beside her moments later, his hand going to the small of her back. She wasn't thinking about the likely human cost of the assault; mutants were feared and hunted here, and that force had come with the intent to kill or enslave from all she had managed to dig up.

"Your voice, my dear, is devastating. And yet you espouse more peaceful notions than I," he said with grim satisfaction over the results she'd gotten.

"I learned to modulate it over the years, so I get the effect I want," she said, shifting just slightly closer, her voice dipping into flirting tones.

"Hmm, and what effect do you wish now?" he asked, matching her tone, as that strong hand on her lower back shifted more to her hip and upper ass.

"The ability to be somewhere private and less clothed, of course," she told him.

He laughed, deep and throaty. "Oh, I like that direct approach." He guided her toward his own room, leaving the aftermath to his lieutenants. Dinah was more than happy with that choice, hoping if she distracted him long enough, he'd choose some other way than direct assault on the attacking nation.

The weather, by layers

50-65 F? - One layer with a jacket.
35-50 F? - Double pants, jacket, hat and gloves.
20-35 g? - Double layers, jacket, hat, gloves, winter boots.
Below 20 F? - Double layers, jacket, hat, DOUBLE GLOVES, Utility Work Suit, winter boots.

And yes, I will wear that at any temp below 20, into the negatives, as witnessed by previous winters. And, since the wind USUALLY dies at night, it's actually not so bad to walk late, unless there's slippery ice on the road.

Giffen plot and breakdowns, DeMatteis script, Hughes pencils.

“Club JLI” (#34) has a real “1970s-1980s movie comedy” vibe. Ex-millionaires Blue Beetle and Booster Gold are still broke and anxious for a new side hustle. Their repo gigs have been getting too depressing, and Booster’s old merchandising and licensing deals don’t bring in much bacon. But they are members of the Justice League International, the highest-profile super-team on the planet! That’s got to be monetizable somehow, right?

Sure it is! And wait until you hear the plan for their new business venture!

What could go wrong? )

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

Well... yes... the world is... isn't it?

Dolly Parton celebrated her 80th birthday (All hail one of the few utterly admirable people around) and it was also the anniversary of Edgar Alen Poe's birth too. I suspect there's a cosmic balance involved in that.

To my own eternal shame I managed to overlook that the 1966 Batman show had it's 60th anniversary last Monday

Disney made something of a tactical error when they asked on Threads for people to post Disney memes about their current mood. Remember a few years back when Elmo asked "How is everyone doing today?" on Twitter and there was a deluge of what social anxiety? Imagine that, but with anger and frustration

Starfleet Academy debuted with two episodes with the anticipated rigmarole from fans and "fans".

No art is above criticism, but the level of vitriol that got sprayed at this show was like a firehose often from those who hadn't watched it and never planned to. I'm not sure what was the worst of it: Was it the racist comments? The sexist comments? The fat shaming? The many combinations of two or more of those?

Was it a perfect show? No, of course not. It's a new show, with a new cast, and a LOT of stuff to shovel into it's premiere episodes. But I thought it showed promise, Sandro Rosta's Caleb is a bit of a dick at the moment (but it pretty enough in a Power Rangers sort of a way to get away with it for maybe one more episode), Holly Hunter is both tiny and imposing, Karim Diané's Kraaag is my favourite Klingon in years, and Gina Yashere's Lura Thok is fantastic! And I love the many easter eggs dotted around the place (There's a passing shot of a Brikar, an Exocomp student, and a scene-stealing extra as a Kelpien who has Doug Jones "Bob Fosse-like" Saru arms swinging thing down to an absolute T so when they're in a scene you NOTICE!)

If you're wanting an even handed but generally positive approach to Trek, I'd suggest the "Trek Culture" YT channel, where their "Ups and Downs" reviews are geeky as hell, but in the FUN way.

I think my biggest gripe was the shiny new "Trek Franchise" opening logo has some lovely new models of the main starships from each series (With the Defiant for DS9), but omits the Protostar and the Cerritos, which just seems rude!
