Why this piece is awesome: I'm calling this a Heated Rivalry rec as HR is the reason Connor and Hudson became Olympic Torchbearers. The artist beautifully combines individual reference shots of them, and even makes the hideous uniforms look good!

For the first time since - I want to say October 7th 2023, though technically it's 2014 - but 843 days after, as of today, there are finally no more hostages in Gaza, living or dead.

I legit didn't think we'd get here. I hoped, but realistically, I was sure some would still be missing forever, lost to the fog of war and time. The big weight off was in October this year, when the last living 20 came back, but now, today, the final marker, and something families - and hopefully, maybe, this country - can begin to try to recover and move on, for real.

(Recovery also means getting rid of current leadership amen, which, easier hoped for than done. But I hope.)

Time to start collecting - packing away - tossing out - all of my yellow ribbons and flags, from my car, from my porch, from my bag. It's about time.

Please disambiguate your nominations! This means adding the fandom in (brackets) to the end, e.g. Character: Alis Landale (Phantasy Star)

We already have the fandom Star Trek: The Original Series in the tagset. Nominator of plain Star Trek, Kirk and Spock already exist there. TOS Movies nominator, would you mind being merged into regular TOS, as they're the same cast and continuity, or is there some big division I'm unaware of?

So often I write about extravagant, expensive dinners and specialty dining events, but today I’m here to tell you of an absolutely banging bargain lunch.

I love Indian food, but it’s scarce to come by in my area. The closest establishment to me is Amar India Restaurant, and it’s actually its north location in Vandalia rather than its original location in Centerville, which is considerably further south from me.

Amar India North has a lunch menu that starts out at a mere ten dollars, and only goes up to about fifteen dollars if you get one of the more expensive dishes like the lamb curry. There’s also chicken curry, chicken tikka masala, I think a fish curry, and the one I always get, saag paneer.

Once you pick your main, it comes with rice, naan, their vegetable of the day, and a small dessert. This is what the saag paneer platter looks like:

A stainless steel platter with different sections, one filled with rice and the naan on the side, one containing the dessert, one holding the vegetable of the day, and of course a section holding the saag paneer.

Two pieces of plain naan, rice, a big ol’ portion of saag paneer, pointed gourd as the vegetable of the day, and two jalebi for the dessert. I have had this platter three times and each time the vegetable has been different, but never the dessert, which is a shame because I’d love to try some of their other desserts, especially the kulfi and Gulab jamun.

It may not look like much saag paneer but I can assure you it’s a generous portion size for the price. I’m pretty sure the saag paneer platter in particular is thirteen dollars, plus I always get a mango lassi, which is $4.50, so in total I’m spending less than twenty dollars for a very filling and very delicious lunch! I truly think this is such a good deal andย you get to support a local business.

I know the Centerville location used to have a lunch buffet. I don’t know if they still do but I’d like to make it down there sometime soon to see for myself. There’s also a Beavercreek location under the name Jeet India Restaurant, so I’ll have to check that out next time I’m in the area.

I just had this meal on Friday but now I’m already craving it again after telling y’all about it. Especially the mango lassi, I really could drink a gallon of that stuff.

Oh, and while you’re at Amar North, they just opened an Indian grocery store right next to the restaurant called Anand Indian Grocery. I popped in there on my latest visit to the restaurant and they have a huge selection of items, including specialty produce and cooking ingredients like ghee and tons of spices, plus the biggest bags of rice you’ve ever seen.

They also have tons of fun and unique snacks and sweets, and even ice cream flavors I’ve never heard of.

If you’re in the Dayton area, I highly recommend making it out to Amar North for their lunch special sometime this week. It’s between the hours of 11am and 2pm. I think I’ll go again tomorrow for a nice solo lunch.

Do you recommend any lunch specials in the Dayton area? Are you also a big saag paneer fan? Let me know in the comments, and have a great day!

The Travel Gods Demanded a Sacrifice

Posted by John Scalzi

I was away this weekend visiting a friend and seeing a concert, and my return home was delayed a day because of the weekend snowstorm. Heading back, I managed to avoid the crash on the I-70 that closed all the eastbound lanes of the interstate, but as you see, that luck came at a price: Immediately upon returning home my boots de-soled. The travel gods, apparently, needed a sacrifice.

These boots, as it happens, are nearly twenty years old, so the sacrifice was reasonable. It wasn’t like I had just gotten these shoes. In fact, the fact they were twenty years old was probably why they became a sacrifice; after two decades, the glue had clearly desiccated into nothingness. I can’t complain. I got good value out of these boots. The travel gods may take them to Shoehalla with my blessing.

In other news, I need new boots; there’s a ton of snow on the ground and my Sketchers are not gonna handle that. A-shoppin’ I will go.

Do you create fanart, fanfic, podfics, videos, or any other kind of digital fanwork? Do you have services you can offer your fellow creators such as betaing, typesetting, research, or sensitivity reading? Do you want to use any of this to raise money for progressive causes?

If so, welcome to the 10th annual Fandom Trumps Hate auction!

Some light reading before you go straight to the signup form - even if you've participated before, please check these out!

One change to note: If you would like to offer your fanwork in "Any fandom," the options have changed. We have summarized those changes here.

If you've read all that and are ready to proceed, the 2026 signup form is here!

The main auction is only for digital fanworks - do you create physical fan crafts that you'd like to raise money with? Check out our Fan Crafts Bazaar!

The Fandom Trumps Hate Fan Crafts Bazaar

Every year, we get emails and comments from people who make physical fan crafts or art who want to list their creations in FTH. There are a variety of reasons that non-digital fanworks are not a good fit for the way we run the main FTH auction, but in 2020 we introduced the Fan Crafts Bazaar, a way for fan crafters to support our orgs parallel to the main auction. If you'd like to see what it looks like, you can view last year's Bazaar here.

2026 Fan Crafts Bazaar calendar:

Monday, Jan 26th - Signups open
Friday, Feb 27th - Craft Bazaar opens
Tuesday, March 3rd - Signups close
Wednesday, Mar 18th - Craft Bazaar closes (though individual stalls may close sooner)

You Don't Know Jack

January 26th, 2026 14:00

Posted by Sharyn

Once Upon A Time...

...there was a boy named Jack:

...who used a lot of sunblock.

Jack lived with his mother in "The Hovel by the Phallic Fountain."

The hovel needed a new roof, but Jack and his mother had no money.

So they decided to sell their only cow, Boxy.

(Look, I don't know what it is, either, but this story is going to move along a lot better if we can all just agree it's a cow, OK? Moo.)

On the way to the market, though, Jack met:

...the Way Stuffed Cellulite Man.

Mr. Way Stuffed convinced Jack to trade him the "cow" for a tray of tragic spleens.

(Sure, they look happy now, but that's only because they don't recognize my masterful use of foreshadowing.)

Jack's mother was livid when he can home with the spleens, and made Jack give them a proper burial.

(See? Tragic.)

After a miserable night with no supper, Jack woke up to see a flowing vine where he'd buried the spleens:

Flows like a river.

The Tragic Spleenstalk reached all the way to the clouds. As Jack stood gaping, suddenly the Faceless Fairy appeared!

"Jack, climb the spleenstalk to find a magic chicken who lays golden eggs!" she projected telepathically.

(She doesn't have a mouth. Try to keep up.)

"But beware the ogre who guards the chicken!"

So Jack climbed the spleenstalk, and there was the chicken:

In a festive knit straitjacket.

Jack had just grabbed the bird when he heard a roar!

It was the ogre, Oh'Duh!

"Take the bird not you will!" Oh'Duh screeched.

Jack quickly fled down the spleenstalk, where his mother was waiting with a dump truck and a huge load:

...of dirt.

Before the ogre could follow, they knocked over the spleenstalk and buried it, trapping Oh'Duh in his cloud city.

With the money they made from the golden eggs, Jack and his mother were able to build a brand new home by the Phallic Fountain, complete with matching turrets.

(Those two really know how to use their heads.)

And they all lived happily ever after.

Well, OK, maybe not ALL of them.

Thanks to Amy, Giopi, Sarah J., Graham K., Sara E., moxie, Jenni Q., Shannon C., Becky C., Flowe L., Dani S., and Daniel C. for the fairy fail ending.

I always like twisted fairy tails told from the villain's perspective, and this version - as told by the giant! - has rave reviews:

Only $7, too, if you'd like to add it to your kids' library.

If you want to thank someone in Emor for your inn's lavatory, this is the place to do so. Emor's engineers are the best in the world and are admirably eager to spread their wonderful inventions outside of Emor. If you wish, you may make arrangements here to have your own tribe's housing improved; some engineers are willing to travel as far as the mainland, if the job is interesting enough.

As you may have guessed by now, "Engineering Academy" means that engineering students are trained here. While the Law Academy and Medical Academy train only peninsulareans, the Engineering Academy opens its doors to mainlanders as well. You may apply for entrance into the Academy while you are here.

[Translator's note: The Emorian engineers are so discreet in their work that they aren't often seen. However, their Marcadian colleagues are the ones to blame for the terrifying catapult used in Empty Dagger Hand.]

Roundup

tropicsbear: Close up of Tadashi and Ainosuke from Sk8 the Infinity fighting (Sk8: Tadashi and Ainosuke fighting)
[personal profile] tropicsbear

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Was on leave from work today to run some errands related to government paperwork. I'm old enough that there wasn't a way to track your social security payments online when I first got my social security number, so I immediately ran into a wall when I attempted to make an online account last year because I didn't have any of the requirements to even set up an account. Fortunately, I got that all sorted this morning.

๐ŸŒบ TIL that [youtube.com profile] TWINENGINE (the anime's producer) has been uploading weekly chibi Jigokuraku extras! They're pretty short but they do give additional insight into characters' relationships with one another. Ju Fa and Tao Fa seem to be favor one another more than I thought they did, and it was nice seeing Choubei teasing Touma like the gremlin older brother that he is.

๐ŸŽจ Ended up spending an inordinate amount of time this afternoon/evening fiddling with my layout. Turned all my entry links into rainbows (1) to represent the zone as it's portrayed in Sk8 since I decided to go TadaAi with the layout images and (2) because why not? Implementing the gradient took me long enough, then I had to fix everything I accidentally broke in the process (entry tag colors, crosspost link colors, etc.).

โ„๏ธ I think I'm going to give up on trying to catch up with the rest of the [community profile] snowflake_challenge days. I wasn't able to keep up with the regular responses because Life Happened and I've lost the drive to go back and answer the prompts for the days I missed.

Colours for Comments

I have been futzing with my new layout, which is 'Gibbous' by Phidari for Heads Up.

It's looking great, the only thing I am stuck on is that I am wanting the comment box background (#ffffff) to be the same colour as the post background (#c6b6b3). Unfortunately, I cannot find an option for this in the customizer:

I can toggle it on and off in the Firefox inspector, but my knowledge beyond that is limited:

Are there any options for using some custom css to change that colour, or hide it?

Any help or advice is much appreciated! <3

One more week at 65 reps, then next Sunday I bump it up to 70.
